Dental Sedation

Dental sedation is a service we offer that helps you feel calmer and more relaxed at the dentist’s office, allowing you to get the treatment you need for a healthy smile.

In dentistry, sedation can be used in various ways, such as making oral surgery more comfortable or calming an anxious patient by using a milder form of sedation. As much as we always strive to create a peaceful, fun, and enjoyable atmosphere, we understand when patients may need a little more assistance. Sedation dentistry is an option we offer as part of our commitment to genuinely caring about our patient’s experience at the dentist’s office.

We offer oral sedation and IV sedation options in our office. To learn more about these, please read below. If you have any questions, we invite you to call our Ohio office.

Oral Sedation

Oral conscious sedation involves taking prescription medication before your appointment that will help you feel relaxed. Usually, your dentist will prescribe this medication at least a day before your visit; it can then be taken an hour before your appointment time. This gives the medication ample opportunity to take effect.

The sedative may cause feelings of intense drowsiness, making it unsafe for you to drive to or from the appointment. Arrangements will need to be made for a separate driver to bring you to our office and back home after. Oral conscious sedation is an excellent option that can allow you to relax and feel confident during your time in the dentist’s chair.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is the most powerful type of dental sedation and is often used for more complex procedures. This form of sedative is an anesthetic delivered by the intravenous (IV) route. With this type of sedation, medications are given through an IV line that delivers them directly into the bloodstream, producing a nearly immediate effect that typically makes patients fall asleep. This allows dentists to quickly and smoothly perform their work without patients having any memory or fear of the appointment.

Again, due to the intense effects of this medication, we require a friend or family member to be present to drive the patient to and from this visit.
