What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the ultimate solution to restoring missing teeth, replacing not only the appearance but the function and health of your entire smile as well. Working together as three distinct components; the titanium implant post, the abutment, and the dental crown, each serve a job in restoring your smile. The post replaces your tooth root while the abutment acts as a connecting piece, securely attaching the beautiful and durable dental crown to the implant post. Once the implant has been embedded into the jawbone, it can last a lifetime with proper care.

The Implant Process

Are you interested in getting an implant to restore your missing tooth or teeth? We’re excited to get you started with your free consultation at our office in Columbus, OH! The process for dental implants is different for every person. Many factors may alter your treatment plan, such as the number of teeth missing, the need for preliminary treatment, or the type of implant chosen. Below, you will find a brief overview of how this journey proceeds for most patients.

The process of receiving an implant may vary depending on each individual patient; however, this first step remains the same for everyone. The journey will start with a free consultation; this will give us the chance to get to know you, your interests, and your goals for your restored smile. This time will also allow us to answer your questions and become more familiar with what we can do to help you accomplish your goals. We will also take x-rays, plan implant location, and conduct a complete examination to determine the current health of your smile.

By conducting our exam and taking x-rays, we will be able to better understand what needs you are facing and what preliminary treatment must be completed prior to implant placement. These preliminary treatments may include the extraction of a badly damaged or decayed tooth, a bone graft to restore bone density within your jawbone, or the treatment of gum disease.

Once you have completed any preliminary treatments, or if prior treatment is not needed, we will schedule the surgical placement of your implant. During this appointment, we will provide localized anesthetic and sedatives to keep you comfortable. We will begin by creating a small incision in the gum tissue over the desired placement location for the implant. Through this opening, we will insert a small titanium post into the jawbone and embed this within your natural bone tissue. The gum tissue will then be closed for healing.

The healing process will take place between three and six months following your surgical placement. While it may be hard to remain patient during this time, it’s important to recognize the necessity of this step. Over this time, the titanium will begin to bone with your jawbone, establishing a stronger connection than would be possible through medical means alone. As the post fuses to the jawbone, it will become as stable as a natural, healthy tooth root.

Once the healing phase is complete, we will add the abutment and dental crown to your implant post. With all of these pieces securely connected together, the entire restoration will look and perform just like a natural tooth; you can now smile, laugh confidently, and live life to the fullest once again with a full smile!

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer many benefits beyond most restorative options as they truly simulate the sensation of being a real, natural tooth. One of the advantages to appreciate about dental implants is that they are permanent with long-lasting crowns; once the implant is placed and healed correctly, it is there for a lifetime! Other benefits include:

  • Natural feel
  • Easy maintenance
  • Stunning appearance

The Cost of Dental Implants

Just as the process for installing implants varies, the cost of the entire procedure varies as well. This is due to the many factors that influence the expense, such as the need for preliminary treatment and what those needs entail. If you would like to know the cost of your implant treatment, please contact our office to schedule your free consultation! During this visit, your questions can be answered, and we will be able to provide this individual information that you’re looking for.
